This sensual and evocative romantic drama charts two interlinked family stories. One, set in British India of the 1920’s, portrays an illicit love affair. The other, set in the 1980s, finds a woman travelling to India in order to uncover the secrets of her family’s past. Adapted by Ruth Praver Jhabvala from her eponymous prize-winning novel, it’s one of the highlights of Merchant Ivory’s body of films.

In collaboration with SACF’s Heritage Lottery funded Indo-British Film Collaboration Project (Merchant-Ivory (1966-2007).
