India! My India!

In this book, two of India’s foremost film makers talk about Yavar Abbas’ filmmaking in India! My India! We have an excerpt ofan interview where Indian Cinema doyen, Satyajit Ray, commends Yavar’s “truth of observation and sincerity” and adds how he “was extraordinarily impressed by the fact that he [Yavar Abbas] had not glossed over anything…” And, we also have veteran film maker Shyam Benegal recalling the powerful impact of watching India! My India! in Milan way back in 1968. Besides conferring upon Abbas the proud epithet of “a veritable renaissance man”, Benegal adds that Yavar Abbas’ “deep love and compassion for India; its culture and its people was palpable in every scene of the film.”
